What should I expect?

I know how difficult therapy can seem at first, especially for young people and for parents who are trying to navigate how to best help their child.

What happens when you book an appointment with me

Following a thorough assessment (usually lasting one to two sessions), an individualised treatment plan is developed in collaboration with the client, based on a shared understanding of the difficulties. I will write a short report following the assessment to help our shared understanding.

A number of sessions will then be offered (each lasting 55 minutes), drawing on evidence based psychological models. Psychological therapy is a two-way system, it is important that there is space for regular check-ins and feedback to ensure that the treatment plan is meeting the needs.

The ending of therapy is negotiated carefully with all parties.

What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is way of thinking about someone’s difficulties,  by understanding not only how they are feeling and in which situations, but also how this links with what they are thinking and what they do. This helps us develop an individualised understanding of someone’s difficulties that we then use to develop a treatment plan.

This plan will always be based on a shared understanding of the difficulties (something that we call formulation), and then drawing from different evidence based approaches (psychological models that have been shown by research to be helpful).
